Whether you’re looking to buy appliances, clothes, furniture, or food, it’s always good practice to shop around. After all, service, price and quality matter. So what should you look out for when shopping for an electricity provider?
We’ve zeroed in on some of the most important factors you should consider when choosing the company that will power your home or business. Before long, you’ll be a pro at looking at promotions, pricing, and the fine print with a sharper eye.
It’s Not Always About the Lowest Rate
Are you Being Charged Hidden Fees?
Many retail electricity providers (REPs) charge residential consumers fees for routine transactions such as mailing you a bill, calling customer care or making a payment with your credit card over the phone. They may require you to use auto-pay or else they’ll tack on another fee.
The method of payment you choose shouldn’t be considered a hassle, but sadly, many power companies use it as a tactic to squeeze more money out of their customers. That’s not the only thing. Moving to a new home? If so, it’s possible that your electricity provider will charge you a disconnect/reconnect fee on top of the fee charged by your local transmission and distribution company. But in the age of smart meters, connecting and disconnecting electricity has never been easier. Champion Energy doesn’t charge you for the basics and will ALWAYS have your best interests in mind. We’ll even let you know when your contract is expiring.
TIP: Every Electricity Plan Has An Electricity Facts Label
Keep companies on their P’s and Q’s by asking to see the electricity facts label. It will show all the rates and fees you’ll be charged. All providers are required to have this info available with the plans they are offering.
Price: What You Really Need To Know To Compare
You don’t need to be a math whiz to know if your energy provider is charging you an astronomical rate. The rule of thumb is to look at the average price/kWh (kilowatts per hour). The electricity facts label will disclose the average rate at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh. Keep a close eye on the minimum use fees, too. If you use anything less than 1000 kWh, you can be charged up to $15. Champion Energy one of the lowest minimum use fees in the industry – $6.95 for usage under 800 kWh. And remember, we will never charge for customer service.

How does your provider stack up in the ratings?
If They’re Doing it Right, You’ll Know.
If you’re checking out a movie review or even a restaurant review, a 5-star rating is a good thing. It’s the same deal when it comes to the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) rating system. It ranks utility companies on their complaint levels. If you see an electricity company listed with a 5-star rating, it means the company has consistently delivered quality service and has made customers priority #1.
TIP: Read Customer Reviews Before Choosing an Electric Company.
Don’t take our word for it. See what consumers of other utility companies are saying. Word of mouth is a very powerful tool.
