Champion Energy is committed to the community and charities we support, as we work to power lives and power businesses. The Champion Scholars scholarship program was created to recognize those that feel the same way.
In our inaugural year of the scholarship program, we received over 900 applications, from students in Texas, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Illinois. Applications were evaluated based on their academic performance, awards, volunteerism, and the response to this question:
Being a champion is about more than winning or being number one. Sometimes being a champion is about giving back to the community, standing up for your beliefs, or supporting a cause you believe in. What makes you a champion in your school or in your community?
We are very proud to recognize this year’s scholarship winners:
Kaitlyn Martin, Baytown, Texas
Kaitlyn graduated Valedictorian from Robert E Lee High School and is currently majoring in Mechanical Engineering, with a 3.9 GPA. A program she developed in High School, Shattered Dreams, taught peers the dangers of drinking and driving, and she recently chaired the Relay for Life in her community.
Joey Gu, Katy, Texas
Joey maxed out the SAT with a 2400 score, and will graduate from Cinco Ranch High School this year. He is an active participant and 5-time finalist in the Destination Imagination program, and wrote of his experience teaching English to Chinese-speaking students.
Ping Teresa Yeh, Houston, Texas
Teresa is a Rice University student majoring in Cognitive Sciences and Psychology, who is the president of PAIR, the Partnership for the Advancement and Immersion of Refugees. PAIR helps refugee youth transition to life in Houston.
As one of our winners said, “Ultimately, service is one sure way to share hope for a better future with everyone in the community. To be a true champion, you must look beyond just yourself. You must connect with your community and thereby change the world, one little bit at a time.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. Congratulations!
